Born in 1959, Gary became keenly interested in drawing at a young age.  He attended the Alberta College of Art in 1989, with a double major in painting and printmaking and graduated  with honours in 1991. Gary has painted a wide variety of subjects, including landscapes, figures and abstracts. While he enjoys sketching outdoors, most of his work is done in the studio from reference images. Over the years Gary has travelled extensively in both Europe and the United States. Gary lives and works in an old 1912 house near downtown Calgary with his librarian wife and young son.

Using figurative, landscape and abstract imagery to form  constellations of images, his current paintings  involve a knitting together of highbrow and ridiculous elements which invite surprised engagement. Mashing up styles and sensibilities creates tension between what is serious and what is frivolous.  In this way he invites the viewer into an inquiry which is both superficially amusing and deeply serious.
